How to Tell If Your Plant Is Getting Enough Light

Search this and you get a list of symptoms: pale leaves, long bare stems, no new growth. Those lists are accurate. They are also the last step, because every item on them is something the plant does after weeks in the wrong place.

The question has a hidden second half. “Is my plant getting enough light” only becomes answerable once you add “enough for what plant, in what spot”, and almost nothing written on the subject adds it. So the advice arrives as a symptom checklist, and a symptom checklist can only tell you about a decision you already made some weeks ago.

There is a better order. Read the plant for what it is already telling you, then read the spot, then decide whether the two belong together. The rest of this page does those three in that order.

A room can be lit and still have almost nowhere in it that a plant would call bright. The floor is the honest reading.

These are ordered by how soon they show up. The ones near the top are worth acting on. The ones near the bottom mean the plant has been short of light for a long time.

Notice what is missing from that list: any way to tell the difference between a spot that is slightly short and a spot that is hopeless. The plant looks the same in both cases for months.

Seven indoor spots at typical clear-day conditions, scored for three plants at once. The spot is what moves here, and so does the plant. Each column is scored at that plant’s own preferred temperature, humidity and airflow, so light is the only thing left varying down a column.

Three things fall out of that table, and none of them survive being compressed into a single rule.

The brightest spot is not the best spot. The snake plant is at its best everywhere except the two extremes, and the east sill is one of the extremes. Moving a tolerant plant closer to the window is not automatically an improvement.

A fiddle leaf fig’s usable range is about one metre wide. Against the glass it is perfect. One step back it is already flagged. This is the plant people describe as dramatic, and the drama is mostly this.

The pothos covers most of the room and then stops. It holds every spot from the glass to the far corner, a north sill included, which is where the reputation for surviving anywhere comes from. It slips at the same two extremes the snake plant does: the east glass, and the corner with no window in reach.

The light figures are estimates built from window direction, distance and typical clear conditions, not meter readings from your home. What travels is the shape: a north window is far brighter than the phrase “low light” suggests, and the spot that actually runs out is the one with no window in reach.

Why your eyes are the wrong instrument

Human vision adjusts continuously and hides exactly the difference that matters. We put a phone down in six places in one ordinary living room on a clear day, and the readings fell far faster than anyone standing in that room would guess:

The third column is the same readings on a meter that shows foot-candles, which is what most plant guides quote, and the published bands for what counts as bright indirect light disagree by more than twenty times.

The middle of that room reads as a perfectly pleasant place to sit. For a plant it is about three per cent of the light available at the window. The full six-point measurement, with method and equipment, is here.

The same adjustment is why the seasonal version catches people out: a room at a tenth of its summer brightness still reads as bright enough when you walk into it.

Two ways to read a spot before the plant does

The shadow test, no app and no equipment. Hold your hand about thirty centimetres above the spot around midday and look at what it casts:

A reading, if you want a number. A phone can be used as a light meter, laid flat and screen up at the height the pot will sit, which is a very different measurement from holding it at eye level and pointing it around. The ten-second method and its honest limits are here.

Either one beats waiting for a leaf to tell you, because both of them work on the spot before you commit a plant to it.

So what counts as enough?

For your plant in your spot, the only useful form of the answer is a comparison: this plant, that place, do they fit. That is the question the free checker on this site answers in about thirty seconds, without an install and without an account, and it says so plainly when it does not have enough information to answer rather than inventing a verdict.

If the answer comes back short, the fix is usually one of three, and they are worth trying in this order:

  1. Move the plant closer to the glass.
  2. Move it to a different window.
  3. Change the plant.

The third one is not a defeat. A snake plant on a north sill scores better than a fiddle leaf fig in the same place ever will, and it will look after itself while it does.

What is the first sign a plant is not getting enough light?

New leaves coming in smaller than the old ones. It arrives before stretching or yellowing and it is the easiest to miss, because a plant with slightly smaller new leaves does not look unwell. Compare a new leaf against one from the previous season.

Is there a lux number that counts as enough light?

Not one that works across plants. In our own scoring, the 3,640 lux we estimate for a north sill is ideal for a snake plant and a pothos, and already flagged as dim for a fiddle leaf fig. The number only becomes meaningful once it is paired with a particular plant.

Can a plant get too much light indoors?

Yes, and it is easy to cause by moving a shade-tolerant plant to the brightest sill on the assumption that brighter is always better. In the table above the snake plant is flagged at the east sill and perfect one metre back.

How do I check the light without buying a meter?

Two ways. The shadow test needs nothing at all: a hard-edged shadow at midday means direct sun, a soft readable one means good indirect light, and a shadow you can barely find means the spot is dim. For a number, a phone laid flat at pot height gives a usable reading.
