“Bright indirect light” is on the care tag of nearly every houseplant sold, and almost nobody attaches a number to it. The published sources that try do not agree: their floors run from 1,000 lux at one end to 10,764 at the other, a gap of more than 10×. That is not a detail you can read around. Of the 49 readings we have taken indoors, 21 fall inside the stretch those sources argue over, where one source would call the spot bright indirect and another would not. Here is the honest version, with the readings attached.

What is bright indirect light for plants?
Bright indirect light is lots of light, but no direct beam landing on the leaves. The spot is well-lit (you could read comfortably) yet the sun itself never touches the plant. In practice that means one thing: at or within about a meter of a decent window, just out of the direct sun.
What it is not: the middle of a room. That’s the myth that kills plants. The center of a typical living room is a small fraction of the window’s light: a cave with good PR, not bright indirect. The measurements are brutal on this point.
What does bright indirect light look like indoors?
Two ten-second checks:
- The window test: from the plant’s spot, can you see a good chunk of sky or window? If yes, you’re probably in bright-indirect range. If the window isn’t really visible from the pot, the spot is likely too dim.
- The shadow test: at midday, a spot with bright indirect light casts a soft-edged but clear shadow. A sharp, dark shadow means direct sun; a faint or missing shadow means it’s too dim.
How many lux is bright indirect light?
There is no agreed number, and anyone who gives you a single one is inventing precision. What we can give you is a real spread from one room, so you can see how fast the label stops applying.
In one ordinary living room we measured six spots on a clear day, at pot height, within the same hour. One room, one day, one clear sky: your figures will differ, and the gaps are the point rather than the digits.

Read down that list and the phrase sorts itself out. The first two readings are what a plant tagged bright indirect is actually being sold for, once you keep the sun’s beam off the leaves. The third is getting thin. The fourth is under 3% of the window, and it is where most people put the plant, because standing in the middle of a room genuinely feels bright. The last two are not lighting a plant at all.
This is also why a number on its own can mislead. The same spot reads very differently on an overcast morning and a clear afternoon, and a phone is an estimate rather than an instrument. A tier that holds up across a normal week is worth more than a single reading to three digits, which is why we report a band and say so.
If your meter reads in foot-candles rather than lux, the same disagreement is waiting for you there, and it is wider: published bands for bright indirect run from about 90 to 2,000 foot-candles.
How far apart are the published numbers?
The six readings above are one room on one day. The gap quoted at the top of this page — the distance between the lowest published floor and the highest — is what happens when you line up several sources and none of them are answering quite the same question. Arguing about which one is right goes nowhere, because none of them are wrong on their own terms.
Before sorting anyone into camps, here is where indoor light actually sits when you measure it:

The middle of that spread is 2,349 lux, and both contested edges — 1,000 and 10,764 — sit inside it. The typical indoor spot is not near the argument; it is in the argument. Sorting the same readings by those two edges makes that a count:

The middle row holds more readings than either end. For a spot in that stretch, whether it counts as bright indirect depends on which source you happened to read first — nothing you can measure about the spot will break the tie, because the tie is not about your spot. Reading one more source adds one more opinion, not an answer.
Below 1,000 lux, no published floor we found would call the spot bright indirect, and neither do we. At 10,764 and up, every floor has been cleared — though the narrowest published band tops out well below that figure, so a reading that finally satisfies one source has already overshot another. So the usable answer to “how many lux” is a band with a source attached to each edge, and that is what the two ten-second checks near the top of this page are for: they tell you which end of the band you are standing in without a meter.
What thrives in it
Most of what people actually buy: monstera, pothos, philodendrons, peace lily, calathea and prayer plants, most ferns, and the wider aroid family. These are the plants the phrase was written for. And they do genuinely well in it, right up close to a window that isn’t blasting them with direct sun.
Moth orchids are the plant this phrase gets attached to most often, and in a south-facing room it turns into a specific distance: about two metres back from the glass, where the score jumps from flagged to 94 out of 100.
Frosted glass does not disqualify a spot either: it diffuses rather than blocks, which is what makes a windowed bathroom a real option for exactly the plants above.
Stop guessing at the phrase
When a spot lands in the stretch the sources disagree about, “is this bright indirect?” stops having an answer that survives reading one more source. Measuring the spot more carefully will not produce one either: the disagreement is between the sources, not about your room.
So it is worth changing the question. Whether a spot earns the label is a vocabulary problem. Whether one named plant will do well standing in it is not — that has an answer, and it never needs the phrase at all. It needs the light the spot actually gets, together with warmth, humidity and airflow, weighed against what that plant puts up with. That check runs below, on this page.
