How Far From a Window Can a Plant Be — and Still Live?

A meter from the glass can cost a quarter of the light; the middle of the room, almost all of it. But the window decides it more than the metres do: at a north window the sill is the best spot for all four light bands, and at a south window the low-light plants do best about three and a half metres back.

How far from a window can a plant be? Closer than you’d guess. Because light doesn’t fade gently as you walk away from a window. It falls off a cliff. The difference between a great spot and a dead one is often a single meter. And your eyes will never tell you where the edge is.

In one measured living room, a spot a meter from the window still held most of the window’s light; two to three meters back kept under a fifth of it; the middle of the room, only a few percent. A meter is a small move; a few meters is a cliff. The full six-spot measurement lays out every reading, it runs from the window all the way down to a thousandth of the light in the corner.

How far from a window is indirect light?

Bright indirect light isn’t a distance. It’s a position: near the glass, out of the direct beam. But distance decides how much of it survives, and here is how much, in the room we measured:

The first two rows are the 25% drop quoted at the top of this page. By the middle of that room it is low light whatever it looks like to you, so the practical outer edge of bright indirect light sat somewhere between two and three meters. That edge moves with the size of the window, what’s outside it, and which way it faces. Your room will differ in the digits, rarely in the pattern.

A rule of thumb that works

You won’t carry lux numbers around, so use this: if the plant’s pot can “see” a decent chunk of the window or sky, the spot is probably workable. If the window isn’t really visible from where the pot sits, the spot is probably too dark. It’s rough, and it’s right far more often than eyeballing brightness.

Distance is the lever you control

You can’t add windows, but you can move a plant a meter. That single move can multiply its light several times over, a bigger intervention than any fertilizer or fuss. When a plant is struggling at a north, east or west window, “closer to the glass” is usually the fix. At a south window it is as often the opposite, and the next section counts how often.

One symptom is worth naming, because it shows up before anything looks wrong. A plant that has drifted below the light it needs stops investing in new structure first: a monstera stops splitting its new leaves, a trailing plant runs longer between them. Old leaves stay green for months, which is exactly why the distance rarely gets blamed.

The steepest fall-off we have scored: a jade in a south window, from the glass to three metres back. The spot is what moves here. What does not: the same plant, the same south window, with 21 °C, 45% humidity and light airflow on every row.

Three metres of floor costs that plant twenty-three points, and the score it lands on is the same one a north window gives it at any distance at all. For a plant with a smaller appetite the same three metres would cost nothing, which is why this lever is worth pulling deliberately rather than as a general rule.

How often moving it actually helps

Before computing anything we read what people are told: twenty-four sources end to end on 29 August 2026 — extension services, botanic gardens, publishers, plant-care apps, lighting makers, forums and reference works — from which we transcribed 314 placement rules, then re-fetched every page to check each one. One was thrown out: a ratio we had halved in the copying.

Of the 313 left, 152 attach a distance. Eighty of those are a number you could go and check; the rest are phrases — a few feet, across the room. Only 36 give a distance and a window together.

Read those 36 and the advice for a south window runs from less than 3 feet to 15 to 20 feet. That is not a disagreement about physics: they are answering for different plants without saying which plant — and which plant is the whole of it.

That caveat deserves a number rather than a word — and not a number taken from the handful of rooms we happen to have written up. Every plant in our care data can be walked from the glass to the back of the room at each of the four windows, so that is what we did.

Where the best spot actually is, computed for every species in our care data at thirteen distances from each of the four windows. Each plant is held at its own preferred temperature, humidity and airflow, so light is the only thing changing; the distance is the middle of its band, and the bracket is what the sill costs against it. At a south window 44% of the library does better away from the glass than on it. In every cell that says to move back, that held for every plant in that band, not for most of them. These are engine scores, not meter readings.

That is the whole library at once, and it answers the question the 36 rules could not: the distance is not one number, it is four, and which one applies is decided by the plant rather than by the room.

The split is the useful part, and it has a mechanism. A south window has more light than most plants want, and distance is how you spend the surplus. A north window has no surplus, so every step back is pure subtraction. “How far back?” is unanswerable until someone says which way the window faces.

Two limits worth stating

These are model scores, not meter readings. The six readings higher up the page are the measured half of this page; the table above is not. And the library is complete only in the sense that it covers every species we hold: it is our care data, and a plant whose real preference sits at the edge of its band will not behave like the middle of it.

At home three metres back is a choice; in an office it is usually where the desk already is. Walking one pothos across three desks in the same office puts numbers on that version of the problem, and the interesting part is how little the last three metres change once the plant has left the window row. A basement inverts the curve entirely: the whole penalty lands in the first metre and the next three cost nothing, because there is nothing left to lose.

When there is no window to move closer to, the lever is a different one: the honest answer for a windowless room is a grow light, not a hardier plant.

How far from a window can a plant be?

Closer than you think. Within about a meter of a good window is genuinely bright; two to three meters back drops to a fraction; the middle of a room is usually too dim for anything but tolerators.

How far from a window is indirect light?

It’s a position more than a distance, near the window, out of the direct beam. In the room we measured, that band ran from the glass out to roughly two or three meters; past it the reading fell to a level that counts as low light. A bigger or brighter window pushes the edge further out.

Why does one meter make such a difference?

Light from a window falls off steeply with distance. A meter can cost roughly a quarter of it, and a few meters most of it. The drop is far steeper than it looks to adapted eyes.

What’s an easy way to judge if a spot is close enough?

If the pot can “see” a good piece of the window or sky, it’s probably workable. If the window isn’t visible from the pot, the spot is likely too dark.
