How can I tell if a plant is getting enough light?
The plant says so before a meter does: new leaves coming in smaller than the old ones, more bare stem between leaves, growth leaning hard toward the window, or nothing new at all through spring and summer. Those signs mean it has been too dark for a while, which is the argument for taking a reading before you place a plant rather than diagnosing one after.
Can light be too bright for plants?
Yes, and it is the failure people expect least. Direct midday sun through glass will scorch leaves on plants sold as “bright light”. Bright indirect and direct sun are not two points on one scale. A spot can be bright all day and still take almost no direct sun, and for most houseplants that is the spot you want.
Do plants need direct sunlight, or is a bright room enough?
Most common houseplants want bright indirect light: a spot that sees plenty of sky and little direct sun. “A bright room” is where it gets slippery: the room can feel bright while the spot you are eyeing, 2 m back and off to one side, sits at a small fraction of the window’s light. The six readings above are one example of exactly that.
Can I use my phone to measure light for plants?
Well enough to be useful, not well enough to quote to three digits. Treat a phone reading as a band (dark, dim, bright, direct sun) and use it to compare one spot against another rather than to chase an exact figure. Read at plant height, at the same time of day, on a clear day where you can.
Is my room bright enough for plants?
It’s the right worry and the wrong unit. A room doesn’t have one brightness. It has a gradient, and the gradient is far steeper than your eyes report.
On a clear day around midday I measured every spot in one ordinary living room where a plant could plausibly live: same hour, sensor facing up, roughly plant height, using a phone as a rough light meter.

Same room, same minute. The window reads roughly a thousand times the corner. Which is why “is my room bright enough” has no answer, and “is this spot bright enough” does.

What counts as “bright enough”?
It depends on the plant, and that isn’t a dodge: it’s the whole problem. A windowsill that keeps a jade plant happy will scorch a calathea. “Bright enough” is a range that belongs to the plant, not a line that belongs to the room, which is why the checker above asks which plant before it asks anything else.
Light is also only one of four things that decide whether a spot works. Temperature, humidity and airflow decide it too, and they shift from spot to spot inside one room. A bathroom shelf and a hallway shelf can be one wall apart and two different climates.
What this checker can’t tell you
- It works from what you describe plus the weather where you are, so what it gives back is an estimate, and it’s labeled as one on the result.
- It can’t see your curtains, the overhang above the window, or the building across the street.
- It doesn’t know what that spot does in winter.
- It can’t replace a reading taken in the spot itself.
