A north-facing window is the honest underdog of plant spots. It never gets direct sun, its light is steady but capped, and (the part that catches people) it’s usually dimmer than your eyes report. Your eyes adjust so smoothly that a spot with a fraction of the light still reads as “bright enough.”

How much light does a north-facing window get?
The published guidance sorts by wall before it sorts by plant, and this is what it gives a north one.

(Northern hemisphere; flip this if you’re south of the equator.) A north window gets indirect sky light all day and direct sun almost never. That makes it the steadiest window in the house and also the dimmest of the four, which is a better trade than it sounds.
- Right on the sill: genuine bright-indirect territory for much of the year.

- Winter: the ceiling drops further. A plant fine on the sill in June may be starving there in December.

That room’s orientation was never recorded, so none of those figures is a north-window reading. The part that travels is the shape of the fall-off: the cliff sits between the glass and the room, not between one room and another. A north sill starts lower than those glass readings because the sun’s disc never reaches it, and then it drops away on the same curve.
For scale, the brightest window in the same house reads about 13,000 lux at the pane against roughly 3,640 here, which is why the south-facing window guide spends most of its length getting plants away from the glass rather than closer to it.
Do north-facing windows get direct sunlight?
Almost never, and that turns out to be the useful part. Deep in summer at high latitudes a north window can catch a thin slice of very early or very late sun, when the sun rises north of east and sets north of west. Every other month of the year, no.
Where this goes wrong is that people hear “no direct sun” and store it as “low light,” which is a different claim. A north sill in June can carry more light than the middle of a room whose window faces south. Direct sun is a question about whether the sun’s disc reaches the leaf. Brightness is a question about how much light lands there in total. Only the second one decides whether a plant grows, and the two come apart constantly in real rooms.
The practical upside of a north window is that it has no bad hours. A south or west sill swings from scorching to nothing across an afternoon; a north sill holds roughly the same value from mid-morning to late afternoon. For plants that burn easily, steady and modest beats bright and spiky.
The window that does give a beam without much heat behind it is the east one, at roughly 6,500 lux at the glass and all of it before the room warms up. What an east window suits is a different list from this one.
All of this assumes the window really does face north. The gap between a north pane and a south one at the same distance is 3,640 lux against 13,000, which is far too big to guess at, and one question about where the sun lands settles it without a compass.

The last three aren’t north-window lovers so much as tolerators: they hold steady rather than race. Scored across a bedroom, that tier holds its rating much further back than the distance rule suggests.
Two of these questions come up often enough to have a page of their own, each one scored at four distances back from the glass: a ZZ plant in a north window, which holds a full score to two metres and 99 at three, and a monstera in a north window, which does not.

If a guide tells you everything works in a north window, it’s guessing. Some things don’t, and it’s cheaper to know before you buy.
A jade is the clean example of that, and the scoring is unusual enough to be worth its own page: the sill and the far wall come back one point apart, so there is no better spot in the room to move it to.
The plant most often asked about here is the one this window suits least. A fiddle leaf fig scores 65 out of 100 pressed against north glass, with its light dimension flagged, and its light dimension fails outright from two metres back. No distance at a north window comes back a good fit for it, which is worth knowing before rather than after.
Anything on that list wants a beam, and the two windows that have one are not interchangeable: a west sill reads about 7,800 lux and carries an afternoon heat pocket this window never gets. A west window is the harder version of that trade.
How far from a north window can a plant sit?
Closer than most people want to hear. Every window loses light with distance, but a north window starts from a lower ceiling, so the same number of steps costs it proportionally more. In the room we measured, moving from the glass to two or three metres back cut the reading to under a fifth of what the window itself gave. Take that same proportion off a north sill and the plant is no longer in bright indirect light; it’s in the territory where only the tolerators hold.
Two paired readings we took make the same point from the outside in. A fern hung on a balcony wall read about 10,000 lux while the position just inside the window beside it read 6,000 lux. A balcony rail ran 19,000 to 21,000 lux against that same 6,000 indoors. Glass and angle take most of the light before the room even begins, and everything after that is subtraction.
So the working rule for a north window: treat the sill and the first half metre as the growing zone, the next metre as the holding zone for tolerators, and anything past that as decoration you will be replacing. If the sill is occupied, a plant stand that lifts a pot up to sill height beats a floor position two metres in, every time.
The honest caveat is that none of this survives contact with your specific window. A north window with nothing outside it behaves very differently from one facing a wall four metres away, and a deep reveal or a heavy curtain rail can cost more than a metre of distance. That is the whole reason to read the spot rather than the compass direction.
One thing in this window’s favour: it is the steadiest of the four. In every other window the winter drop is steeper than it looks.
