Six sources on the first page of results give six different numbers, and only two of them are actually minimums. Taken at face value they span eleven degrees, while the plants in our care data are six degrees apart.

Most published minimums are not minimums. They are comfort ranges with the label changed.

That is why a home at eighteen degrees reads as a problem in one article and as perfectly normal in the next, and why the number you need is the one for your plant rather than for houseplants in general.

Only two of them are floors. The rest are comfort ranges printed under headings that read like minimums, and taken that way the published minimum runs from 10 °C to 21 °C. Eleven degrees is not a rounding difference. It is the difference between a room you need to heat and a room that is fine.

The sources disagree more than the plants do

The eight plants above, counted at each temperature a room might realistically sit at. Counted against the comfortable band our care data holds for each of the 8 plants above, as a plain range rather than a score.

Eleven degrees where the count is eight out of eight, and that is the finding. It is also most of the range a heated home sits in anyway.

So the biggest single factor in whether you think your home is too cold is not which plant is standing in it. It is which article you happened to open.

Run the same comparison on humidity and it comes out the other way round. There the published advice is reasonably consistent and it is the plants that spread, far enough that these same eight share no comfortable humidity at all. One thermostat setting suits every plant in the table above. No single humidity does.

The reason is visible once you look at what each number is describing. Twenty-one to twenty-seven degrees is a comfort range: it is where these plants do well. Ten degrees is closer to a floor: it is where the plant starts to be in trouble. Both get published under headings that say minimum, and a reader with an 18 °C flat comes away believing something is wrong when nothing is.

Cold is the reason a perfect window can still fail

The card above is a north-facing windowsill in winter, the kind that often has a radiator under it. The light there is ideal for a peace lily, a genuinely good reading of 3,640 lux, and the spot still comes back at 45 out of 100. Nothing is wrong with the light. The temperature alone fails it.

This is the part that gets missed when light is treated as the whole question. A windowsill is the coldest surface in most rooms and it is also where the light is, so the two things people optimise pull against each other in exactly the season when it matters. If your plant looks unhappy on a bright sill in January, moving it into more light is the wrong correction.

The lowest published minimum and the highest, and the three steps between them, applied to one real spot. Only one thing moves down the table. The spot itself does not: the north sill on the card above, where the light is already ideal, with 60% humidity and light airflow held the same on every row.

Nothing improves between 10 and 13 °C, because below the band the plant is already coping rather than growing. The distance from the coldest published minimum to the warmest is the distance from a failing spot to a perfect one, on a sill whose light never changed.

About this article

We estimate indoor temperature rather than measure it. Light is measured, by laying a phone down at the spot; temperature is worked out from local weather adjusted for being indoors. A cheap thermometer on the sill will beat us at reading your January nights. What it cannot do is the part above: tell you which of your plants that reading rules out.

The comfortable ranges are from our curated care data, and the published figures were read from the first page of results on 12 August 2026. Not here: frost, greenhouses, moving plants outdoors, or any claim about how long a plant survives below its band.

What is the minimum temperature for houseplants?

For the plants in our care data the lowest comfortable temperatures sit between 10 and 16 degrees Celsius, depending on the plant. Published guidance ranges from 10 to 21 degrees, so the sources disagree with each other by more than the plants do.

Is 15 degrees too cold for houseplants?

For a jade or a spider plant, no. For a peace lily, a monstera or a prayer plant it is below the comfortable band, which does not mean the plant dies, but it does mean the spot is working against you rather than for you.

Why do guides give such different minimum temperatures?

Most of them are quoting a comfort range rather than a floor. Twenty-one to twenty-seven degrees describes where plants do well, not where they start to suffer, and a reader whose home sits at eighteen concludes something is wrong when nothing is.

Can a spot have perfect light and still be wrong?

Yes, and cold windowsills are the usual way it happens. A north sill measured at 3,640 lux is ideal light for a peace lily, and at 13 degrees that same spot scores 45 out of 100 because temperature alone fails it.
