Below 6,500 it is flagged as dim, and below about 2,000 it is refused. There is an upper edge too, but it is not indoors: the balcony table further down finds it.

Read the verdict column and the shape is the opposite of every other species page on this site. Three rows pass, and they are the three sills with direct sun. Two rows are worth a try: the north sill at 65 and a metre inside the east window at 67. The other four are refused, and they include the spots a pothos or a peace lily would call perfect, two and three metres inside a north window at 47 and 46.
Set this next to the pothos table and the two plants trade places almost row for row. The south sill that refuses the pothos at 45 is the fig’s 100. The spot three metres inside the north window, where the pothos scores 100, is the fig’s 46. Same house, same clear day, and the one instruction printed on both labels is the one that fits neither of them.
The cliff between two and three metres
A south window is the fig’s best window, so here it is followed all the way in, half a metre at a time and then a metre at a time.

The first two metres are the plant’s whole comfortable zone: 100 at the glass, 100 a metre back, 98 at two metres and 6,300 lux. Then it drops. Three metres back, at 3,969 lux, is 66, four metres is 63, and five metres, at 1,575 lux, is refused at 47. The difference between two metres and three is a foot or two of floor and 32 points. That is the cliff, and it is why a fiddle leaf fig that was fine by the window drops leaves when it is moved across the room to where it looks better.

What about the balcony?
A plant that scores 100 at 13,000 lux sounds like a plant with no ceiling, so it is worth checking the sunnier direction. Run the same fig through the same scoring on a south-facing balcony, at 45,000 lux, and it is back to worth a try, at 62. In the open, at 80,000 lux, it is refused at 42. So the window is the fig’s spot, and the window is not a step towards the garden. The plant wants the brightest place indoors, and indoors is the key word in that sentence.
What does 6,500 lux look like in a real room?
Numbers like 6,500 mean very little until you have stood somewhere and know what they feel like, which is the problem, because they do not feel like anything. So here are six places in one ordinary living room, read on a clear day:

Line that up against the tables and this room has exactly two spots for a fiddle leaf fig: the window at 20,000 lux and the spot a metre from it at 15,000.
The spot two to three metres in, at 3,500 lux, is already below the band and matches the three-metre row of the south walk. The middle of the room at 570 lux is where the fig gets refused. The 3,500 and the 570 both come from the same measured room, and it is a bright room by most standards.
Why the published numbers disagree with each other
Search this and you will find one botanic garden publishing a floor and a target for the same plant, the target eight times the floor. Another source gives a foliage band from 1,500 lux, and an extension service files the plant under medium light. Our own scoring turns green at about 6,500 lux, above every floor in the table and inside the highest band.
They can all be defended, because a floor and a comfortable band are different questions. The floor is where the leaves start to drop; the band is where the plant is comfortable, and a fiddle leaf fig can sit well above its floor and still lose leaves slowly for a year. None of the published figures can tell you whether your shelf clears the bar, and that is the only question that changes what you do next. The same table built for a jade plant has the same shape and a lower cliff, and the peace lily is the mirror.

Are fiddle leaf figs safe for cats?
The fiddle leaf fig is listed by the ASPCA as toxic to cats and dogs. The sap irritates the mouth and the skin, and a chewed leaf usually means drooling and a sore mouth rather than anything dangerous. It is still worth knowing before a floor-standing tree goes in a house with a chewer, because the lowest leaves are at exactly the wrong height. This is the one fact on this page that does not depend on your spot at all.
