Then what are people actually arguing about?

Two different worries wearing the same clothes.

Both worries are legitimate and neither is answered by a number of feet. They are answered by looking at the spot you actually have, on the kind of day that actually worries you.

The same window, a plant with far less room

Both plants appear on every west-window list. One of them has three metres of room and the other has about one. Temperature, humidity and airflow are held identical for every column (22 °C, 55% humidity, medium airflow), because the point of the comparison is that the spot does not change.

The pothos column does not move at all. The rubber plant column falls off a step between one metre and two, and by three metres the two plants are thirty-six points apart in the same window. Both plants are on every list of things that do well in a west window. Both entries are true. Where this plant does run out of room

The distance never moved this plant. Temperature does. Only one thing moves down the table. The spot itself does not: three metres back from the same west window, with 55% humidity and medium airflow held the same on every row.

So the flat table above is a mild-day table. A west-facing room that shuts up all afternoon in August is a different spot from the same room in April, and that is the axis this plant is actually sensitive to.

The difference is about a fifth of the light at every distance, which is enough to matter at the far end of the room and not enough to matter anywhere else. A north window is a different conversation again, and a windowless room is a conversation about grow lights.

Should a golden pothos be 8 to 10 feet from a west window?

It can be, but it does not need to be. Eight to ten feet is roughly two and a half to three metres, and our table scores that the same as the sill. The advice is aimed at scorch on hot glass, which is a temperature question rather than a distance one.

Is a west window too bright for a pothos?
