One thread on this question has three answers at the top of it, and they point three different ways. The most upvoted says not to bother unless the plant is hydroponic or an air plant. The next says no plant enjoys a bathroom’s humidity swings, and adds that there is hardly any light in there anyway. The third says a pothos would be perfect.
The magazines are more confident and less useful. One large home title says plants can work in a shower if it is the right plant and the shower is set up correctly, without saying what either means. A plant app blog and a company that manufactures showers both answer with the same word: absolutely.

The window decides before the plant does
Same shelf in the shower, same plant on it, same steam in the room. The only thing changing is what window the bathroom has:

Windowless, the shelf reads 397 lux and scores 44. Give the room any window at all and the light stops being the flag. Note what the compass does not do here: north, east, west and south all land on the same 67, because at a metre and a half from the glass every one of them clears what this plant asks for. The difference that matters is not which window. It is whether there is one.
The humidity cannot reach the problem
The steam is the whole reason people want to do this, so it is worth asking what it is actually worth. Here is the windowless shower again, run from a dry room to a steam room:

Nothing moves. Six humidity levels, one verdict, because the light has already settled it. The second comment in that thread was half right: it named humidity swings and low light in the same breath, and only one of the two is doing anything. In a shower with no window you can run it like a steam room and the answer does not change.
Worth being straight about what the table holds still, too. A real shower sits at the top of that range for the minutes it is running and back at whatever the bathroom is for the rest of the day. Each row here is a held value, not an average, which is why the useful reading is the whole column rather than any one row.
With a window, the recommended plant is not the best one
Now the shower that does have a window, with the same damp shelf, and the plants those threads keep naming:

The pothos that got upvoted scores 67. So does roughly everything else people recommend for bathrooms: the snake plant 63, the spider plant 66, the ZZ 63. The three that clear are the ones nobody in the thread mentioned — prayer plant, Boston fern and peace lily, all at 94 — and they clear for the obvious reason, which is that a damp shower is one of the few places in a house where a plant that wants humidity actually gets it. The plants that suffer most in a dry living room are the ones with the most to gain here.
The biggest lever is the fan you already have
One thing has been held still through all of the above: the air. A shower cubicle with the door shut is about as still as indoor air gets. Here is what happens when it is not:

Still air 67. Light air 94. Medium air 100. That is the same plant on the same shelf in the same light, and it is a bigger swing than changing the plant produced. The extractor fan is not only for the mirror. Air movement is the dimension people account for least, and a sealed cubicle is where its absence costs most.
So the order is: window, then air, then plant. Which is close to the reverse of how the question gets answered.
What this does not cover
Water hitting the leaves directly, soap and shampoo landing on them, and a pot with no drainage sitting in a puddle. Those are real and none of them is a light, warmth, humidity or airflow reading, so nothing above sees them. The rest of the bathroom is a gentler problem than the cubicle, and the figures here are estimates built from window direction and distance on the same curated care data the app scores with.
